The National Anti Doping Agency of Germany (NADA Germany) has implemented a project for the retrospective analysis of plasma samples in collaboration with the Institute for Doping Analysis and Sports Biochemistry (IDAS) in Kreischa near Dresden.
As part of this project, plasma samples stored since the beginning of 2024 were analysed retrospectively for the first time in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited Laboratory in Kreischa. The aim was to identify athletes with abnormal Erythropoietin (EPO) profiles and to obtain information for current testing planning and possible targeted testing. All samples tested were negative in the retrospective analysis.
Since the beginning of 2024, blood samples have been additionally centrifuged after analysis as part of the haematological module of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). The plasma obtained is stored with the aim of making it available for future additional analyses and new analysis methods.
Two different test methods were used for the post-analysis: the MAIIA 3F6 Kit and the MAIIA 7D3 Kit. Both kits fulfil the WADA criteria. A direct comparison of these two methods was intended to provide information about their sensitivity and reliability in practical application. There was no difference in haemolysing samples in terms of position and band intensity.
The aim of the project was to establish a basis for future post-analysis of ABP plasma samples and to better evaluate the significance of different detection methods. In the long term, this should further strengthen the target control mechanisms through new analytical findings.
