International Standards

In addition to the WADC, WADA developed the so-called "International Standards". These detailed WADC implementation regulations standardize individual practice-relevant areas such as the process of doping controls, the results management/disciplinary proceedings, the prohibited substances and prohibited methods in the prohibited list or the application for therapeutic use exemptions. They are binding for the signatories of the Code and must be implemented by them accordingly.

Compliance

WADA is responsible for monitoring and enforcing signatory compliance with the WADC and international standards. The International Standard for Code Compliance by Signatories (ISCCS) aims to ensure that anti-doping rules and programmes are applied and enforced in a consistent and effective manner in all sports and in all countries, so that fair competition takes place under equal conditions.

Privacy

The International Standard for the Protection of Privacy and Personal Information aims to ensure that anti-doping organizations apply appropriate, sufficient and effective privacy protections to the personal data they process when conducting anti-doping programmes.

Testing and Investigations

The first purpose of the Standard for Testing and Investigations is to plan intelligent and effective tests both in-competition and out-of-competition and to ensure the integrity and identity of samples collected from the time of the athlete's notification of the test up to the submission of the samples to the laboratory for analysis. To this end, the Standard for Testing and Investigations establishes mandatory standards for test distribution planning, notification of athletes, preparing for and conducting sample collection, the security and management of samples and post-test documentation, and transportation of samples to sites designated by the WADA accredited laboratories for analysis.

The second purpose is to establish binding standards for the efficient and effective collection, and evaluation of intelligence, as well as the use of intelligence for the efficient and effective conduct of investigations during potential anti-doping rule violations.

Results Management/Disciplinary Proceedings

The objective of the International Standard for Results Management is to identify the primary responsibilities of anti-doping organizations related to the results management and disciplinary proceedings. The Standard establishes core responsibilities that apply to the various phases of the results management and disciplinary proceedings, including the initial review and reporting of potential anti-doping rule violations, provisional suspension, anti-doping rule violation determination and proposal from consequences, the hearing process and the issuance and notification of the decision and appeal.

Laboratories

The International Standard for Laboratories (ISL) specifies the requirements to be met by WADA-accredited and WADA-approved Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) laboratories. Among other things, the standard includes requirements for obtaining and maintaining WADA laboratory accreditation and WADA laboratory approval for the ABP.

Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)

The purpose of the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions is to define the conditions that must be satisfied in order for a TUE to be granted and to define the process by which an athlete can apply for a TUE.

Education

The International Standard for Education aims to establish binding standards that support the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of effective educational programmes in accordance with Article 18 WADC. To this end, every anti-doping organization must draw up a doping prevention plan that includes all measures.

Prohibited List

The Prohibited List is updated annually by WADA. The Prohibited List lists the substances and methods that are banned in and out of competition and in certain sports. Which substances and methods are included in the Prohibited List is decided by a WADA committee, the so-called List Expert Group.

The current list of prohibited substances and methods can be found here:
