WADA publishes Prohibited List for 2027

The World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) new Prohibited List for 2027 has been published.

The most significant changes compared with 2026 relate to the following classes of prohibited substances and methods:

• Introduction to the Prohibited List: The wording in the ‘Narcotics’ section has been amended to clarify that the presence of metabolites of these substances should be taken into account as part of the results management process, where relevant.
   
• S4. Hormone and Metabolic Modulators: The title of S4.2 has been expanded to reflect current terminology for substances in this class.
   
• S8. Cannabinoids: Changes have been made to reflect the latest scientific evidence regarding cannabinoids that have delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC)-like effects. Several examples have been added for illustration.
   
• S9. Glucocorticoids: Vaginal administration of glucocorticoids has been added as a permitted route of administration.
   
• P1. Beta-blockers: The information on sports disciplines provided by the international federations listed here has been harmonised.
   
• General: Further examples or explanations have been added for the following classes of substances to help athletes and those around them to better identify prohibited substances: 
  • S0. Non-approved substances,
  • S4. Hormone and Metabolic Modulators, 
  • S5. Diuretics and Masking Agents, and
  • S8. Cannabinoids

Several substances have been removed from the Monitoring Programme, as there is sufficient scientific evidence to show that these substances have not been demonstrably misused as doping substances in recent years.

The WADA Prohibited List is one of nine International Standards, the implementation of which is mandatory for all signatories to the World Anti-Doping Code. It specifies which substances and methods are prohibited both in and out of competition. The WADA Prohibited List is revised once a year.

The WADA Prohibited List 2027 is now being officially translated into German and will be made available on the website of the National Anti Doping Agency of Germany (NADA Germany) at the turn of the year. The English version of the 2027 WADA Prohibited List, as well as the English explanations of the key changes to the new WADA Prohibited List and the Monitoring Program, are now available in the downloads section of the NADA Germany website.
